Letting go is challenging

I am a chronic yes person…

  • want to teach more classes? YES!

  • want to go out of town for the weekend? My bags are already packed.

  • can you take on another personal training client? Absolutely.

  • do you want to sub for a class this week? Always down to help!

…you get the picture. But recently I felt like saying yes to everything finally caught up to me. Specifically, surrounding one of the classes I taught in the city. It took me SO long to get there. I hit every red light, always got behind the slowest person, and no matter how hard I tried to make the ride more enjoyable (podcasts, music, calling my husband), I always ended up being miserable.

When I arrived, the members in my class put me in a better mood, but it didn’t completely erase the 45-minute ride there…and back home. Then when I finally made it home, I could never get back into a groove with work, my entire day just always seemed…off.

And don’t get me wrong, I LOVE these members and we had SO much fun in class, but the bad began to outweigh the good and that is where I began to feel that friction. After listening to the Mel Robbins Show on Spotify - specifically episode 2 “How to Let Go: 2 Simple Ways to Find Clarity and Move On”, I learned that I was holding onto this class but it just wasn’t serving me anymore. I felt so much friction going to teach this class and then it hit me…some friction is worth pushing through, and some friction isn’t.

Yes, there are certain things in life that you’ll feel friction on - getting up early in the morning to exercise, taking a cold shower, confronting a friend when it’s uncomfortable - and with those things, it might be worth it to push through and keep going until it becomes easier.

However, there are other things, that come with friction, that might not be worth it, and that’s ok! Those things are meant to be let go.

And I get it, as a chronic ‘YES’ person, telling people that you are no longer going to do something, and ultimately saying no, is HARD but in the end, it is worth it. I felt so much relief after I sent that email to my Manager that I was not going to be teaching that class anymore. I had no idea how GOOD it would feel to let that thing go!

So if you want to evaluate some things in your life in this new year, I invite you to bust out a pad and paper and make a list or print out the one I have below. In one column you’re going to write down the things that are challenging but are worth the challenge. These things might be habits that you have that are hard but that you know are going to get you to the next best version of yourself. In the other column, you are going to list things that are friction-y that you may need to be let go of. You might shock yourself with what shows up on each side. I was surprised by some of the things that came up for me during this exercise.

After you write this list, it’s time to take action! Don’t be overwhelmed, just do one small thing to make a positive change toward letting something from the right column go. If you need help or want to chat about it, send me a message.

- All the positive vibes,

Becca
